At the order of John the Baptist, young men and women forsake their jobs and take up the mantle of Jesus Christ by becoming his disciples in a musical retelling of the Gospel of Matthew set in modern-day New York City. Using song and dance, the apostles traverse the city, spreading Christ's message of love and tolerance as the time moves ever closer to his betrayal at the hands of Judas and, ultimately, his crucifixion.
Godspell is an amazing rock-musical which has been constantly performed around the world ever since it first appeared in 1970. One of the most successful musicals ever, Godspell is based on Biblical parables and the last seven days of Christ’s life, as told in the Gospel according to St. Matthew. These stories and events are retold in music, mime, and comedy in a way which is sometimes funny, sometimes sentimental and often very dramatic. Well-known songs in the show include Prepare Ye, Save the People, and Day byDay. The show was written by American John Michael Tebelak, with music and song lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. The first performance of Godspell was in 1971 off-broadway and by the summer of 1972 the hit song "Day By Day" was at number 13 on the Billboard Pop Singles Chart!
"Godspell was the first major musical theatre offering from three-time Grammy and Academy Award winner, Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, Children of Eden), and it took the world by storm. Led by the international hit, "Day by Day," Godspell features a parade of beloved songs, including "Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord," "Learn Your Lessons Well," "All for the Best," "All Good Gifts," "Turn Back, O Man" and "By My Side."
